The Essentials of #OfficeMusic

Often overlooked, the music in an office environment can set the mood for the entire workday. Sometimes it’s heard softly throughout the office or only at your personal workstation. The music you choose to listen to will affect your mood, productivity and ability to stay focused, so choose wisely. Music selection can vary greatly depending on the time of day, day of the week or the people you are working with. Before I break down a proper playlist for each time of the day, let’s start with a few dos and don’ts of the office music experience.

 Do:

  • Research on your fellow employees music likes (Nobody enjoys a day full of Nickelback)
  • Play your music at a respectable level (This isn’t Studio 54)
  • Spread music democracy (music dictators are not well liked)

Don’t

  • Play music with offensive language (It’s just not pleasant)
  • Sing out loud (There’s a reason why you’re working in an office)
  • Only play one genre (Spread the love)

Morning

Yawn...this time of the day is when everyone is waking up and trying to get into that daily rhythm. Play something not to overpowering, but something that gives you the boost to start your day strong.

Learn To Fly – Foo Fighters
Alive - Krewella
When You Were Young - The Killers

Midday

This is the time of the day when everybody is up and running on all cylinders. Try to keep the music cheerful and flowing to keep people on track and in high spirits. Make the songs start out a bit slower, but increase tempo as time passes.

 One Love – Bob Marley
Everyday - Dave Matthews Band
Derezzed – Daft Punk

Late Afternoon

After a long workday, everyone has been working hard and needs time to unwind before the ride home. Play some old favorites to raise everyone’s spirits and get them recharged for the next day

 Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
Working For The Weekend – Loverboy
Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
